Course Evaluations

The Faculty of Humanities conducts course evaluations with all lecturers in accordance with the Leibniz Quality in Teaching Program (LQL Program), the quality management system for studies and teaching at Leibniz University Hannover. The modalities of the evaluation are regulated by Circular No. 29/2019, supplemented by Circular A No. 43/2021 and Announcement Sheet No. 11/2021.

  • Obligation to Cooperate

The evaluation regulations and the procedure description require every teacher to participate in course evaluation. The scope of the participation requirements is determined by the NHG requirements. Every course should be included in the course evaluation (LVB) at least once a year.

The faculty complies with this by conducting a comprehensive survey of all courses, in which all courses in the “lecture” and “seminar” formats automatically participate, as well as other suitable formats upon subsequent registration each semester. The LVB is conducted online by students during the course in the Stud.IP learning management system—in the so-called online in-person procedure.

Students, teachers, and the institutes are informed about the exact participation modalities at the beginning of the semester. In justified exceptional cases, it is possible to suspend a course evaluation or to participate in an accompanied qualitative evaluation procedure of the Central Office for Quality Assurance in Studies and Teaching (ZQS) (approval from the ZQS must already be available). The dean of studies reserves the right to decide on a suspension or an alternative procedure.

To generate the course evaluations, the course data from HIS-LSF will be used from the beginning of the semester. Contact and course data should therefore be checked for errors and completeness in HIS-LSF and Stud.IP at the beginning of each semester.

  • Registration Form
    • Late registration for a course in the LVB,
    • Changes to an existing course evaluation,
    • Withdrawal from the LVB in order to participate in a ZQS evaluation procedure (confirmation from the ZQS must be provided),
    • Withdrawal from the LVB,
    • Request for a separate evaluation report by email,
    • Reporting problems

    are submitted via the

    ONLINE REPORTING FORM

    Please note:

    • All course evaluations (LVB) are normally created in Stud.IP around November 1 or May 1. If you do not find a course evaluation in Stud.IP by then, this is normal. In this case, you only need to submit a late registration if you wish to conduct the course evaluation in your course before November 15 or May 15 of the current year.
    • Currently, when an evaluation is created in Stud.IP, the data available at that time is used. If essential course data (title, course type, instructor) changes after this date, the instructor must immediately report this as a change and pay particular attention to the accuracy of the survey data displayed (course title, instructor's name) when conducting the course evaluation.
  • Survey

The following questionnaire is used for lectures and seminars:

    • Sample questionnaire in German
    • Sample questionnaire in English

Question blocks 2 and 3 contain questions that are mandatory throughout the university. These include questions 4.3 and 6.3. The remaining questions are faculty-specific.

To explain the faculty questions and prepare the questions on the course objectives (chapter 8), please refer to the notes from the Teaching Evaluation Working Group.

In the summer semester of 2020, additional course-specific question options for instructors were added in Chapter 13. These allow instructors to ask their own questions to students, e.g., regarding the evaluation of new digital teaching methods. These new questions are designed similarly to the questions on course objectives and should be prepared and announced by the instructor as needed (help with question formulation).

The questionnaire can be completed in German and English. The language can be changed in the online version using the flag symbols.

  • Guide & Checklist
  • Planning

    Advance planning by the lecturer

The online classroom course evaluation (LVB) is usually scheduled for the 12th week of lectures out of a total of 14 sessions from January 12-18, 2026, and should be planned and guided by the instructor in a synchronous course session lasting approximately 10 minutes.

In preparation for the LVB, the instructor should check the date of the evaluation created in Stud.IP after receiving the confirmation email for creating a course evaluation. The evaluation data is displayed in the Stud.IP course itself (via “Events” or “My Events”) under the ‘Administration’ and “Course Evaluation” tabs (see also notes on data collection above). If a course does not have any specific dates listed there, no evaluation has been created for it (yet). It can then be registered later. It is possible to adjust the period of the course evaluation.

    • Please note: Lectures and seminars that end during the first month of the semester (October or April) must be checked immediately at the start of the semester and, if necessary, registered immediately with a suitable evaluation date!

Courses are explicitly evaluated as part of the LVB. It is not possible to evaluate individual lecturers for courses with multiple lecturers. The primary instructor is always the instructor listed first in LSF under the course; however, all instructors appear in the survey itself.

Students must be registered participants in this course in Stud.IP in order to participate in the LVB. If necessary, individual students may need to be added later. This registration should be completed at least two weeks before the start of the evaluation period visible in Stud.IP. If you have any questions about using and maintaining the Stud.IP application, please contact your institute or the E-Learning Service Department (Elsa) (elearning@uni-hannover.de or 0511-762-4040).

    • Please note: Changes to course, participant, or other personal data should not be made in Stud.IP less than two weeks before the start of the course, as automatic synchronization between Stud.IP and the evaluation program will no longer take place after this point!

All change requests or subsequent registration of courses for evaluation must be reported via the registration form (see above).

  • Preparation

    Preparation by the instructor

After checking the exact evaluation date and participant information in Stud.IP, the instructor familiarizes themselves with the questionnaire (see sample under “Questionnaire” above) and prepares theinstructor-specific questions and the five questions on the achievement of learning objectives (see notes from the Teaching Evaluation Working Group under “Questionnaire” above).

    • For face-to-face or hybrid courses (synchronous): In the session before the start of the evaluation period, the instructor asks the students to bring an internet-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop, or similar device to the next session, along with their Stud.IP login details, and informs the participants in advance of any open or self-formulated questions in a suitable form (by email, in Stud.IP as a PDF or info, PowerPoint, etc.). In the session itself, the instructor actively guides the course evaluation process (see implementation in the next step).
    • For asynchronous courses: At the beginning of the evaluation period, the instructor asks the students in Stud.IP (or by email or other communication medium) to participate in the course evaluation within the specified period and emphasizes the particular importance of the results for their own work. Here, too, she informs the participants in an appropriate form of all open or self-formulated questions (by email, in Stud.IP as a PDF or info, etc.).

Detailed step-by-step instructions for preparation and implementation can be found here.

  • Implementation

    Within the evaluation period

From the start of the evaluation period, a new tab labeled “Course Evaluation” will appear in the course on Stud.IP. (Please note: do not confuse this with the menu item “Course Eval.” on the left side of the screen!) Students can use this tab in their account to access the course evaluation (LVB) in the EvaSys evaluation program.

During the course session itself (synchronous course formats in person or online), the instructor asks the students to participate in the course evaluation and allows 10 minutes of the session for this purpose. The instructor announces the prepared questions or refers to them (see Preparation). The instructor specifies the time frame within which the course evaluation can be carried out. Ideally, they emphasize the particular importance of the results for their own work.

    Please note:

    • If fewer than five students are present, the course evaluation should not be carried out. Subsequently, a report on the low number of participants during the evaluation should be made using the reporting form (see above, with the indication “Logout”). If fewer than five people participated in the course evaluation with EvaSys, it is not possible to evaluate the results. The raw data cannot be made available.
    • If students report that the questionnaire contains incorrect information about the course or the instructor, the E-Learning Service Department should be contacted immediately (0511-762-4040). The course evaluation should then not be carried out.
  • Evaluation

The results of the course evaluation are automatically made available to the instructor at the end of the evaluation period and, if more than four participants took part in the evaluation, in an evaluation report in Stud.IP (see the “Course Evaluation” tab within the course). This only works if the instructor is on the LUH network. If the VPN client is not yet installed, the Technical Service Department can help.

The subsequent publication in the course group in Stud.IP is at the discretion of the instructor. If the instructor wishes to publish the report, they can publish the results directly in Stud.IP. For courses with multiple instructors, please obtain the consent of all instructors beforehand.

The instructor is requested to take the results into account when further developing the course.

The evaluation report is archived by the instructor for their own records. An English translation aid is available for the PDF evaluation report.

  • Quality Assurance

The results of the course evaluation (LVB) are incorporated into quality assurance measures relating to teaching (e.g., program reviews of teaching units). This applies to general information (under 2.), core questions that are binding across the university (under 3.), and questions 4.3 and 6.3. The weighted core questions 1 to 4 are used to calculate the so-called Teaching Quality Index (LQI). General information on the LQI can be found at https://www.zqs.uni-hannover.de/de/qs/evaluation-befragungen/lqi/

In accordance with the procedure description, the Dean of Studies informs the Dean's Office, the Study Commission/QM Circle, and the Faculty Council about the results of the LVB for the faculty's courses. At the end of the semester, instructors receive a faculty evaluation report and the faculty's aggregated LQI to help them better assess their LQI.

The Dean of Studies discusses necessary and possible measures for improving the course and its evaluation with instructors whose courses have received a rating in the “critical” range of the LQI (red, i.e., with a result between 2.8 and 5.0). The same applies to instructors whose courses have received ratings in the “slightly critical” range of the LQI (yellow, i.e., with a score between 2.3 and 2.79) twice in a row.

The Vice President for Education will hold a confidential meeting with the Dean of Studies to discuss the critically rated courses for a semester.

The ZQS provides further information and materials for teachers on the topic of competence-oriented teaching evaluation and on teaching and learning reflection in general. The university also offers a comprehensive range of qualification and development opportunities, from events in the continuing education program and special continuing education and qualification opportunities to individual counseling and support on all aspects of teaching, as well as exchange and networking opportunities, including at the international level.
