Is there even such a thing as “finding peace” for people who have experienced war, or is life afterward inevitably marked by suffering?
Tijan Sila has been exploring this theme since his debut, Tierchen unlimited, and also in his work Der Tag, an dem meine Mutter verrückt wurde, for which he received the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize. In Radio Sarajevo, he uses the example of ten-year-old Tijan and his friends to depict the fragile, war-scarred “forgotten” generation of Bosnian children, to whom he wishes to erect a literary monument.
In conversation with Laura Beck, the author offers insight into the origins, language, and driving force behind his literary writing.
