The Atlantic World: Local and Global Dimensions

Key Research Area "The Atlantic World: Local and Global Dimensions"

The interdisciplinary key research area “Atlantic World – Local and Global Dimensions” is characterized by its unique constellation of experts for the regions on both sides of the Atlantic, who investigate the complex links between the countries of the North and South. In contrast to existing “classical” area studies, which either focus on only one (sub)continent or deal primarily with the regions of the “global South,” the researchers collaborating in this key research area concentrate on investigating the social challenges that affect Europe as well as both Americas and Africa. The Atlantic world is the intersection between these continents and part of the global processes of conflict, change, and networking that are today referred to as globalization. The research focus is international, cooperates with numerous universities and institutions in these regions of the world, and promotes scientific exchange between North and South, in which all participants take part on an equal footing.
